3 Swans fly into the WAFL Team of the Year for 2020
Based on performance, every week of the 2020 Optus WAFL Premiership Season saw the best players named in the Team of the Round.
Over the nine round shortened season, a total of 98 players across all clubs received this honour at least once throughout the year. Nine of those players were from Swan Districts.
In accordance with selection in the Team of the Round, the top 22 players, along with three emergencies, were put together to form the 2020 WAFL Team of the Year.
Three black ducks were named in the Team of the Year, while a couple were unlucky to narrowly miss out.
RUCK – COREY GAULT
Corey was an obvious choice to be named as the number one ruckman for season 2020, being selected into the Team of the Round six times in eight games. The former Collingwood big man was consistently dominant all over the ground, averaging 31.1 hit outs, 19 possessions, 3.1 tackles and 3.4 marks per game. He was also voted as one of the best on ground for the Swans seven times throughout the year.
WING – JESSE TURNER
Jesse started off the season well, narrowly missing out on Team of the Week selection in the first three rounds. Polling four times in the remaining five games, he proved to be an important cog in the Swans midfield, and earned automatic selection into the Team of the Year. Averaging 23.1 disposals, 4.75 tackles and 3 inside 50’s a game, he was also voted in the best on ground for the Swans three times.
INTERCHANGE – SAM FISHER
Sam came to Swan Districts with big wraps on him, having spent time both on Sydney’s list and in the VFL. He immediately cemented his spot in the side and became one of the best midfielders, both at the Swans and throughout the competition. Sam finished the season averaging 26.5 disposals, 4.25 tackles and 3.75 inside 50’s per game, along with being voted in the Swans best on ground five times.
UNLUCKY BUNCH
Josh Cipro and Frank Anderson were extremely unlucky not to be named, narrowly missing out on the weekly honours four and five times respectively.
Anderson burst onto the scene at Swan Districts, with his tackling pressure and ability to find the ball obvious amongst his team mates. He finished the season averaging 19.9 disposals, 5.6 tackles and 2.5 inside 50’s, as well as being voted in the Swans best three times.
Cipro has emerged as one of the Swans future leaders in season 2020. He showed a strong ability to play through the middle and push up forward, kicking five goals in eight outings. Josh closed out the season averaging 17.1 disposals, 3.25 marks and 3.9 tackles a game, and finishing in the Swans best on ground votes twice.
