Swans fall agonisingly short of second win over Subiaco
SWAN Districts dominated the second half in Saturday's WAFL Women's contest at Leederville Oval but fell agonisingly short of a second consecutive win against the league-leading Subiaco.
Swan Districts did defeat Subiaco three weeks ago in their last appearance in the 2019 Optus WAFLW Premiership Season with Swans having the bye in Round 10 and then with the general break for the State Game against Queensland.
Subiaco had bounced back from that loss to Swan Districts prior to the State Game with a big win over Peel Thunder, but Swans were still trying to back up the performance only this time doing so at Leederville Oval.
The two teams had two scoring shots apiece in the opening quarter but Subiaco took their chances better with two goals to one.
The Lions then kicked away in the second term holding Swans to just the one behind while kicking three goals themselves to be in control at the major break leading by 24 points.
But Swans weren’t going to lie down without a fight back and kicked two goals to one in the third quarter to close the gap to 21 points at three quarter-time.
It was then all the black-and-whites in the fourth term as Swan Districts kicked three goals to one behind from Subiaco but the Lions just hung on for the nail-biting 6.6 (42) to 6.5 (41) victory.
McKenzie Dowrick and Beatrice Devlyn finished up kicking two goals apiece for Subiaco.
Tarnica Golisano played a terrific game in the win for the Lions with Rebecca Viney, Hayley Miller and Dana Hooker other strong contributors.
Ashley Sharp, Kellie Gibson and Mikayla Hyde all kicked two goals each for Swan Districts.
Shanae Davison, Mikayla Bowen, Mim Strom, Bianca Webb and Stephanie Cain were all among the better players as well for Swans.
Meanwhile in the Rogers Cup contest on Sunday against South Fremantle at Steel Blue Oval, the Bulldogs' Youth Girls prevailed against Swan Districts 7.6 (48) to 3.1 (19).
And then in the Reserves contest, it was South Fremantle too strong for Swan Districts winning 5.11 (41) to 1.1 (7).
