Swans Gear Up For 2018 Season With Win Over Claremont
SWAN Districts got ready for the 2018 WAFL season opener this weekend by beating Claremont in the final pre-season game at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday.
Swan Districts had played in the opening round of the pre-season fixtures with the colts and reserves teams beating South Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval, while the league side narrowly went down by two points.
Then following a week off from an official game against a WAFL opponent the following weekend, Swans were back out there on Saturday against Claremont at Steel Blue Oval.
Claremont went on to win the colts contest 16.2 (98) to 9.8 (62) and the reserves match 10.8 (68) to 6.19 (55), but Swan Districts then won the league affair 9.12 (66) to 8.12 (60).
Swans started strongly after not playing in the second week of the pre-season by kicking five goals to two in the first quarter against the Tigers, and then the only goal of the second term to lead by 28 points at half-time.
Claremont finished strongly with six goals to three in the second half but Swan Districts held on to win by six points.
Todd Banfield kicked three goals for the black-and-whites and Matthew Rogers two.
Steven Payne gathered 24 possessions, Matt Riggio 23, Tony Notte 20, Warrick Wilson 20, Jackson Slater 20, Brayden Hackett 19, Rogers 19 and Corey Gault 19.
Swan Districts' 2018 WAFL season now officially begins this Saturday against Perth at Lathlain Park.
