Swan Districts WAWFL Second Semi-Finals Results
SWAN Districts had a good day at Claremont Oval on Sunday to open the Mundella WAWFL finals with the reserves and Rogers Cup teams advancing to the grand final and the league side narrowly going down to Coastal Titans.
All three of the Mundella Women's WA Football League second semi-final matches took place at Claremont Oval on Sunday with the Swan Districts teams involved in each having finished in the top two positions across the three grades.
Things got underway at Claremont Oval on Sunday with the Rogers Cup second semi-final with Swan Districts' Youth Girls ending up prevailing in a thriller 4.0 (24) against South Fremantle 3.5 (23).
Swans kicked the opening goal of the game with the only major of the first quarter. But with two goals to one in the second quarter, South Fremantle went into half-time with a four-point advantage.
It was a goal each in the third term with South Fremantle still leading by four points by three quarter-time.
It was a tight and tense final quarter but Swan Districts kicked the only goal and that was enough for the one-point victory.
Tara Stribley kicked two goals for Swans and one each to Nyra Anderson and Mikayla Hyde.
That sees Swan Districts straight into the grand final in a fortnight's time at Leederville Oval.
South Fremantle moves into the preliminary final this Sunday against the Peel Thunderbirds at Steel Blue Oval.
The Thunderbirds beat Claremont 5.0 (30) to 4.3 (27) in the first semi-final at East Fremantle Oval on Sunday.
Then in the reserves second semi-final also at Claremont Oval, Swan Districts proved too strong for Coastal Titans, advancing to the grand final with the 4.6 (30) to 3.0 (18) victory.
Swan Districts started impressively with the only three scoring shots of the first half to end up leading by 13 points on the back of kicking two goals from those attempts.
The Titans did get on the board in the third quarter with two goals but Swans did kick a third to remain seven points on top by three quarter-time.
Swan Districts dominated the last quarter kicking 1.5 to the one goal from the Titans on the way to the 12-point victory to advance to the grand final at Leederville Oval in two weeks' time.
Kathleen Prosser, Tayah Reed, Shannan Rene and Sarah Fragomeni were the goal scorers for Swan Districts.
The Titans get another chance to qualify for the grand final by playing in this Sunday's preliminary final at Steel Blue Oval against East Fremantle.
East Fremantle won its first semi-final against South Fremantle 2.6 (18) to 2.4 (16) on Sunday at East Fremantle Oval.
It was then time for the main event with the league second semi-final at Claremont Oval with Coastal Titans ending up winning a thriller 5.10 (40) to 5.5 (35) against Swan Districts.
The Titans set up the win in the first half with the only two goals of the first quarter and then three goals to one in the second to take a 28-point lead into half-time.
Swans fought back hard after half-time kicking the only four goals with two in each of the third and fourth quarters, but the black-and-whites just fell five points short of what would have been a stirring victory.
Ashley Sharp and Stephanie Cain kicked two goals each for Swan Districts with Kellie Gibson booting the other major.
Swan Districts now will host this Sunday's preliminary final at Steel Blue Oval against East Fremantle.
East Fremantle advanced to the preliminary final by beating Claremont 12.8 (80) to 2.2 (14) in the first semi-final at East Fremantle Oval.
Meanwhile, the Coastal Titans await the winner in the grand final at Leederville Oval on Sunday August 20.
