Round 6 WAFL Women’s Match Report
The strong start to the WAFL Women’s season from Swan Districts continued on Sunday with the 28-point win against East Fremantle at The Good Grocer Park.
East Fremantle has played in the past three WAFL Women’s grand finals so it was a significant challenge for Swans to knock them off as they did battle at the newly renovated Good Grocer Park.
Swans ended up kicking five goals to one in the first half and that set up the eventual 10.4 (64) to 5.2 (32) victory to improve them to a 4-1 record on the season and to sit in third position just behind the undefeated Subiaco and Claremont.
Taylah Edwards ended up kicking four goals in the win for Swan Districts from her 14 kicks, five marks and five tackles while Ava Stewart also kicked two goals.
Lauren Quaife backed up her strong performance for Western Australia in last week’s State game against South Australia with a standout showing in the ruck with 16 possessions, 24 hit outs and five tackles.
Jaime Henry was also tremendous for the black-and-whites in the win with 30 possessions, seven tackles and a goal with Carys D’Addario collecting 21 disposals, Naomi Baker 17, Luka Davis 16, Indiana West 15 and Tyla Fitzgerald 15 who also kicked a goal.
The only score for either team in the first quarter was a goal for Swan Districts which was kicked by Taylah Edwards at the 10-minute mark and on the back of that Swans went into quarter-time leading by those six points.
Swans then got rolling in the second quarter by kicking four goals starting with one in less than a minute to Naomi Baker.
Edwards then added her second and third of the game, and Emily McGuire added another just before half-time which saw Swan Districts go into the half-time break leading by 25 points.
Swans kept that momentum going with the first goal of the second half too thanks to Ava Stewart which pushed the lead out to 31 points.
Stewart added a second in the third term as well while Edwards also kicked her fourth of the game to ensure the black-and-whites were still leading by 24 points at three quarter-time.
It was another two goals in the last quarter from Swan Districts courtesy of Tyla Fitzgerald and Jaime Henry to secure the eventual 32-point victory.
The day’s action got underway at The Good Grocer Park on Sunday with the Rogers Cup contest and a flying finish from Swan Districts just came up short with East Fremantle holding on for the 7.7 (49) to 6.12 (48) victory.
The Sharks kicked two goals to one in the first quarter to be leading by six points and while they did maintain their lead, Swans finished impressively with three goals in the last quarter but the one goal East Fremantle did manage meant the home team held on for the one-point victory.
Keira Fawcett ended up kicking three goals for Swan Districts with a goal apiece from Grace Hirst, Summer Ajduk and Sienna Pollard.
