Round 17 Women’s Preview v Perth
It’s the penultimate round of the 2025 WAFL Women’s season and for Swan Districts it presents a chance to guarantee at least third position and to potentially retain hope of a top two finish.
Swan Districts will take on the competition newcomer’s Perth on Sunday afternoon at Lathlain’s Mineral Resources Park in the Round 17 match up that starts at 12:10pm.
The Rogers Cup gets the day’s action underway just prior to that beginning at 10:05am.
Coming into Sunday’s game at Mineral Resources Park and Swan Districts are currently on a three-game winning streak with a 10-4 record.
That has them a game and-a-half behind the top two teams Subiaco and Claremont while being a game and significant percentage ahead of the fourth placed East Fremantle.
That makes Sunday’s match a significant one in the context of the season for Swan Districts.
While it might be unlikely to break into a top two spot, it’s not out of the question for Swans to win both their last two games and then for one of the Tigers or Lions to lose their last two which would mean the black-and-whites can move up and earn a finals double chance.
What is for certain is that a win on Sunday and Swan Districts won’t be able to finish lower than third because they will remain a game and percentage clear of the Sharks and with East Fremantle only having one more game to play this season.
Swans are in an impressive run of form too with the run of three wins against East Perth, South Fremantle and Peel Thunder, and they will look to keep that momentum going against the Demons before the final round match up against East Fremantle at Steel Blue Oval.
Sunday’s opponents Perth are in their first WAFL Women’s season and the Demons have put together the most competitive season of any new team entering the competition.
Perth have won two games this season so far including just two weeks ago with a 23-point win against Peel Thunder before a 45-point defeat at the hands of East Fremantle last week.
The two teams did meet for the first time in the WAFL Women’s competition back in Round 7 of this season at Steel Blue Oval which saw Swan Districts score the 7.5 (47) to 4.4 (28) victory against Perth.
On that day, Emily McGuire kicked two goals for Swan Districts while Carys D’Addario racked up 22 possessions, Jaime Henry 19, Naomi Baker 18, Kayley King 16, Indiana West 15 and Jemma Sly 15.
Meg Grace kicked two goals in that game for Perth with Isabella Shannon gathering 31 disposals, Holly Britton 23, Jorja Haines 18, Gemma Dix 16 and Mia Carlshausen 16.
Meanwhile, the Rogers Cup match up also between Swan Districts and Perth provides the Swans with the chance to stay alive in the race for a top two position.
Since the Round 12 bye in the Rogers Cup, Swans have been in impressive form with the wins against Claremont, East Perth, South Fremantle and Peel Thunder which now has them solid in third position.
Swan Districts currently holds a record of 10 wins, three losses and a draw in the Rogers Cup with two games remaining which means they are guaranteed of not dropping below third, but remaining a chance of finishing second.
East Fremantle do currently hold that second spot with a 12-3 record but they have the bye this weekend before taking on Swan Districts in the final round.
That means the equation is simple for Swans and should they win their last two matches against the Demons and Sharks then they will end up in second spot and earn a finals double chance, and set up a second semi-final match up with the reigning premiers West Perth.
