Round 15 Women’s Preview v South Fremantle

Swan Districts is fresh off a triple figure win in the WAFL Women’s competition and now can further consolidate third position with a win against the fourth placed South Fremantle on Sunday.

Swans were dominant last Saturday with the 101-point win against East Perth and now it’s back to Steel Blue Oval this Sunday afternoon against the Bulldogs in a match that will have a big say in where both teams finish up.

The game gets underway at Steel Blue Oval at 2:10pm on Sunday afternoon following on from the Rogers Cup contest that starts at midday.

As a result of that big win last week, Swans sit in third position on the WAFL Women’s ladder with an 8-4 record to be percentage ahead of the fourth placed South Fremantle who hold an 8-5 record.

That places extra significance on Sunday’s contest and a win for Swan Districts will all but lock away a third place finish and a home first semi-final given they will be a game and percentage ahead of South Fremantle, and with three games to go while the Bulldogs have just two to play.

The last time the two teams met was back in Round 8 of this WAFL Women’s season which saw Swan Districts score the 8.5 (53) to 6.3 (39) victory over South Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

In that win for the black-and-whites, Taylah Edwards kicked four goals and Emily McGuire added two while Carys D’Addario collected 23 possessions, Jaime Henry 19, Naomi Baker 16, Sienna Gerardi 16 and Kayley King 14.

Swan Districts WAFL Women’s coach Jason Burton is rightfully pleased with the way his group is coming together late in the season even having had to deal with some key players now being unavailable.

He is not only confident in what they are going to be capable of on Sunday afternoon, but the rest of the season as well.

“For us we’re just trying to work on that consistency throughout a whole game. We were up against Claremont and let it slip late just with some moments that we might have made the wrong decision in or didn’t kill a contest good enough with,” Burton told 91.3 SportFM.

“So it’s that consistent within the whole game that we need to make sure we’re on top of, but we still have a fairly young and inexperienced group. These things come with the experience but we take every bit of confidence into the rest of the year that our best footy can match with anyone.

“We’ve shown signs of that probably in every game this year so we’re pleased with how things are going, and now this week’s huge against South Fremantle. It will go a long way to us securing a finals spot and even a home final in that week one so a lot of energy and effort is going into this week.

“Hopefully the girls get the result because they do deserve it with the work they put in during the week to try and be as good as they can be, and our form has been actually really strong and improving.”

Meanwhile, the Rogers Cup match up also between Swan Districts and South Fremantle will be at Steel Blue Oval on Sunday starting at 12pm.

Coming into the game and Swans are sitting in third position with eight wins, three losses and a draw following last week’s win against East Perth, and they can stay in touch of the top two and remain locked into third by beating the fifth placed Bulldogs on Sunday.

Last time the two teams met in the Rogers Cup was also in Round 8 at Fremantle Community Bank Oval where they played out a draw with South Fremantle scoring 2.6 (18) and Swan Districts an inaccurate 1.12 (18).
