Round 15 WAFL Women’s Match Report

Swan Districts went a long way to securing a finals position in the WAFL Women’s competition and a home first semi-final with the strong six-point win at home to South Fremantle on Sunday.

Third position in the WAFL Women’s competition went on the line for the Round 14 match up at Steel Blue Oval on Sunday with both Swans and the Bulldogs coming into the match up in impressive form.

In the end it was Swan Districts who prevailed 5.4 (34) to 4.4 (28) with the result improving Swans to a 9-4 record on the season to be a game clear in third position.

Taylah Edwards and Adi Griffith both kicked two goals apiece in the win for Swan Districts with Emily McGuire adding another major.

Jaime Henry has stepped up remarkably in the midfield for Swans since the absence of Carys D’Addario. She produced a career-best performance on Sunday with 39 possessions, eight tackles and six marks.

Tyla Fitzgerald also gathered 18 disposals, Kayley King 16, Luka Davis 16, Summer Ajduk 14, Indiana West 12, Jemma Sly 12 and Lauren Quaife 10 to go with 32 hit outs and five tackles in the ruck.

South Fremantle got off to a good start with the first goal of the contest at the 11-minute mark through Marie Polimeno but then Swan Districts answered with goals to Adi Griffith and Taylah Edwards to be leading by seven points at quarter-time.

It then took eight minutes of the second quarter for a goal to be kicked and that saw Swan Districts push their lead out to 12 points when Edwards added a second of the day.

South Fremantle answered through young gun Alira Fotu and not only did she kick one to bring the Bulldogs back within six points, she added another soon after to tie scores up.

In the end Swans went into the half-time break with a one-point lead before the only goal of the third quarter went the way of the home team thanks to Griffith and her second saw the black-and-whites lead by seven points at three quarter-time.

That lead grew to a match winning 13 points to start the fourth term with a goal to Emily McGuire. Even with a goal in response from the Bulldogs to Annalie Polimeno, Swans held on for the important six-point victory.

The Rogers Cup match up between the two teams started the day’s action on Sunday afternoon at Steel Blue Oval with Swan Districts downing South Fremantle 6.7 (43) to 3.1 (19).

It was always going to be a fascinating contest with both teams in the finals mix and it was Swans getting the better of the start with two goals to one in the opening quarter to be leading by eight points at quarter-time.

South Fremantle responded in the second term with two goals to one and that meant it was just a one-point lead in favour of Swans heading into the half-time break.

The trend continued of the teams taking advantage of the scoring ends at Bassendean with Swans kicking the only two goals of the third quarter to take a 17-point lead into three quarter-time.

South Fremantle then didn’t manage to score in the final term with Swan Districts securing the 24-point victory to see them sit in third position on the Rogers Cup ladder to be six points out of second but 10 points clear of fourth.

Keira Fawcett and Olivia Rasenberg kicked two goals apiece in the win for Swans with Nahala Hall and Sienna Pollard kicking one each.
