Round 15 WAFL Men’s Match Report v Perth
Swan Districts managed a two-goal lead early in the fourth quarter against the finals bound Perth before the Demons secured the 13-point win in Round 15 of the WAFL Men’s season on Saturday.
Swans arrived at Lathlain’s Mineral Resources Park on Saturday looking to put in a strong showing despite the growing injury list they are battling through, and they ended up more than taking the challenge up to a Demons team heading to just a second finals appearance in 28 years.
Swan Districts even managed to open up a 12-point lead with a couple of quick goals to Leigh Kohlmann to start the last term, but Perth responded and ended up winning 13.7 (85) to 10.12 (72).
Kohlmann finished the game kicking another three goals for Swans from his six kicks for the afternoon.
Captain Jesse Turner racked up 27 possessions for Swan Districts with Jye Chalcraft adding 26 disposals, Nathan Blakely 23 (18 hit outs), Max Chipper 22, Aidan Clarke 22, Jehb O’Donohue 19, Bryce Watson 19 and Otis Harvey 16.
Swan Districts made a strong start with the first goal of the game thanks to Ayden Cartwright at the 10-minute mark before Perth did respond just before quarter-time and it was Swans clinging to the one-point lead.
Swan Districts also started the second term with the first goal thanks to Tom Smith. Swans also got goals to Luke Kelly, Jackson McLachlan and Seb Bright before half time but Perth also managed five goals in the term to hold a slender four-point lead by half-time.
It took more than 11 minutes for the first goal of the second half and that went the way of Swan Districts thanks to Ben Hewett to put them back in front by two points.
Jiah Reidy also added another in the third quarter and it was Perth clinging to the one-point lead by three quarter-time.
Swans then went in front to start the last quarter with a goal to Leigh Kohlmann and then he added a second to push the lead out to 12 points, and the win was within touching distance.
Perth did then kick the three goals, but Swans got back within two points courtesy of Jye Chalcraft, but once more the Demons answered with the last two goals of the game for the eventual 13-point victory.
The action on Saturday at Mineral Resources Park got underway with the colts match up and Swan Districts ended up with the thrilling 10.9 (69) to 8.14 (62) victory against Perth.
The win improves Swans to a 7-6 record on the season to remain in fourth position just percentage behind the third placed West Perth but a game clear of the fifth ranked Claremont.
Swan Districts kicked three goals to two in the first quarter to be leading Perth by seven points at quarter-time before it was two goals each in the second term with the black-and-whites still leading by seven points at the main break.
Swans kicked away in the third stanza with four goals to one which saw that lead out to 21 points by three quarter-time before Perth did deliver a big finish but the visitors held on for the seven-point victory away from home.
Carlos Partington, Levi Calcott and Anthony Hansen all kicked two goals apiece in the win for Swan Districts with Blake Kelly racking up 29 possessions, Soren Feast 24, Cooper Rullo 23, Leon Kickett 20, Tylah Williams 19 and Leo Steed 19.
The reserves contest was up next and that saw Perth overcome the fast finishing Swan Districts for the eventual 12.4 (76) to 8.15 (63) victory.
It was a flying start from the Demons who kicked the only six goals of the first quarter but Swans did manage to respond with two goals to one in the second term to but Perth’s lead to 27 points at the half-time break.
It was then three goals each in the third quarter with Swans cutting the Demons lead back to 22 points before the black-and-whites also kicked three goals to two in the last term but just ended up falling 13 points short.
Chayse Martinson kicked four goals in the loss for Swan Districts to go with 22 possessions, 11 marks and six entries inside the forward 50.
Connor Blakely also racked up 28 possessions, Chase Loftus 27, Brad Lynch 22, Tom Cathcart 22, Lucas Andrews 21, Jacob Coniglio 20 and Luke Cotellessa 17 while Troy Yukich had 46 hit outs to go with 10 disposals.
