1990 Grand Final 3^rd quarter

Seven minutes later Strempel took another big mark, but hit the post. Then Greg Walker crumbed the ball expertly (twice!) to set up Andy Holmes, who calmly slotted a 40 metre goal from the flank. Claremont ruckman Peter Higgins gave him some late ’treatment’ and a willing melee erupted, with Higgins going on report [he was suspended for 2 matches]. Swans won the fight and the battle as in the closing minutes of the quarter the lead was extended to 44 points as Andy Holmes scored again, followed by David Ogg getting his second, both from long set shots:

(PH) “Andy had a great quarter with three goals, he had a ‘big’ leg for a small bloke, he could kick goals from outside 50 metres with ease. He had a quiet first half, but certainly made up for it in this quarter, as did Len Gandini, who had several important possessions….”.

(BS) “That was Andy’s game, he could kick them from just about anywhere…..and I don’t remember any handballs…..”.

By scoring five goals to one against the breeze, to make the score 16.5 to 8.9, Swans had played a terrific ‘Premiership’ quarter, and the flag (and the $150,000 bonus) looked to be in the bag.
