Round 2 WAFLW Preview v Peel Thunder
Swan Districts is at home at Steel Blue Oval for the first time this WAFLW season on Sunday to play host to Peel Thunder and looking to get on the board with a win for the occasion in 2024.
Swan Districts will play host to Peel Thunder at Steel Blue Oval this Sunday with the Rogers Cup contest beginning proceedings at 10.05am before the WAFLW league contest follows at 12.10pm.
Both the Swans and Thunder Rogers Cup teams are coming off opening round victories last Saturday against Claremont and West Perth respectively so will be looking to keep their winning form going at Bassendean on Sunday.
Then both League teams are coming off season-opening WAFLW losses last Saturday so will be determined to get their first wins on the board on Sunday.
There were plenty of encouraging signs last Saturday from Swan Districts' first appearance of the season under new coach Ben Bowness, but the end result was a 16-point defeat at the hands of Claremont at Revo Fitness Stadium.
While there are plenty of changes at both teams coming into the 2024 season including having new coaches in charge, going back to last year Swans and Peel split their two meetings.
The Thunder managed to beat Swans in Round 1 last year in Mandurah by five points but Swan Districts got revenge in the return encounter in Round 9 at Steel Blue Oval with the 29-point victory on the way to a finals appearance in 2023.
One of the members of the Swan Districts' leadership group, Naomi Baker made a strong start to the season last week against Claremont and now couldn’t be more excited to get out on Steel Blue Oval against Peel this Sunday.
"I'm very excited for Sunday and very keen for us to keep building on what we started last weekend," Baker said.
"I'm very excited to get back out there and I definitely think that it's going to be a good game, and there's always a good rivalry between Peel and Swans.
"It's always exciting to play at home and it's always good to get family and friends coming down so it's going to be really good and hopefully we get some good weather too."
Swan Districts had a host of new faces last week for the Round 1 clash with Claremont and one of those was Subiaco recruit Millie Edgar.
After playing her Rogers Cup football with the Lions, she joined Swan Districts over summer and played her first WAFLW game to become the 100th debutant for the club.
She now can't wait for another first this Sunday with a first home game for Swans at Steel Blue Oval.
"I'm very excited for Sunday's game at home," Edgar said.
"I treat whatever home ground I have for my team just like my own home so I'm very excited to get to play our first game this week, and bringing the competition to Peel and see what we can put up.
"We've trained really hard this week so I reckon we can have a good crack at it and hopefully get the win."
