Local connection to boost Swans’ Onslow impact

Friday, June 16, 2023 - 9:32 AM

Young Malgana Nhanda woman Nicole Drummond knows first hand what it’s like growing up in the small community town of Onslow, and now her experiences will help Swans deliver even stronger impact to young people in the town, as she joins the club full time as Social Impact Development Officer. The new full time position has been created through partnership with Mineral Resources, who have committed to supporting Swans for the next 3 years, alongside long term program partner Chevron.

Family has always been important for Drummond and it’s what drew her back to Onslow recently following time in Perth as a boarder at St Hildas and the birth of her own children. Her connection to youth programs and Swans also started from her childhood, “I was a toddler in the old Powerhouse in Onslow, as my Mum was a volunteer, and my stepdad was the Youth Coordinator. I would be taken to these activities as a toddler and often attended camping trips and excursions as the baby of the group” recalled Drummond. “I was 11 when Swans first came to Onslow” she added.

The old Powerhouse is now the Swans Youth Shed and Drummond will play an important role in mentoring the next generation in the town. “As a teenager I wish I knew the endless opportunities that were available to me so that I could’ve gotten out of my comfort zone and set myself up for the future” she stated in regard to her own youth experience, adding “If there was a movie about my life it would be called ‘Nothing goes to plan’. During my time at Swans I hope to be able to engage well within the community in a positive way, to help make a lasting impact within the younger generations.”

With a favourite quote being from Mother Teresa “The greatest good is what we do for others”, Drummond is a great fit for this role, which focuses on empowering communities and individuals to create better futures, particularly amongst young people in Onslow.
