State Leadership Role Stuns Star Swan
Earning selection in the Kia WA State side turned into a double celebration for Swan Districts midfielder Jesse Turner.
The 27-year-old has been named Vice Captain as he prepares for his second appearance at state level.
“I was extremely happy to be picked to play, and then when the coach told me I had a leadership role it was a proud moment,” Turner said.
“I’ve always considered myself a leader through my actions and how vocal I am out on the field, and for the coaching staff to have the confidence in me to help lead this group of boys alongside Matthew Jupp, who will be a great skipper, is a huge honour.
“I’m extremely humbled and honoured to wear the black and gold again.”
After making his debut for the Black Swans at Optus Stadium last year, Turner can’t wait to run onto the Adelaide Oval on Friday.
“When I first started playing league football, it was something I thought about and wanted to work towards and I have put in a lot of work behind the scenes over the years to get my game to where it needs to be,” he said.
“To be selected for the second time is an unreal feeling and something I don’t take for granted.”
Turner has again been prolific for Swans this season, averaging 30 disposals a game.
“I think I have been consistent, but I have always been my harshest critic, and considering we are losing close games, I spend more time thinking of what I could have done or should have done, rather than what I did well,” he said.
“Overall, I feel I’m playing well but can go to another level.”
The prospect of regaining the Haydn Bunton Cup is fuelling Turner before the side flies to Adelaide tomorrow.
“The squad came together a bit earlier then what we did last year, and we’ve caught up as a group outside of training to bond more,” he said.
“We’ve have had some great structure this year with our training, and I think that will help come Friday.
“I wouldn’t say I think we can get the result; I expect us too.
“I haven’t played in as many WAFL finals as I would have liked, but to get the chance to go over to face the SA team with the best players from the WAFL is definitely going to be one of my career highlights.”
The Kia WA State side plays South Australia at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.
The match can be seen on the AFL App from 1.40 (WA time).
