Swan Districts Foundation Launch

Tuesday, September 13, 2022 - 4:05 PM

The Swan Districts Foundation was officially launched at the club’s last home game for the 2022 season where it celebrated 40 years since the first of the club’s three consecutive 1980’s Premierships.

The occasion was marked by the presence of thirty 1980’s Premiership players, staff and Board members, and it kicked off with a bang raising over $25,000 at the pre-game Legends Luncheon.

The Foundation is an independently managed incorporated body to ensure the long-term future and sustainability of the Swan Districts Football Club.

While football is in the club’s DNA, it exists for a deeper purpose. It builds community and develops people.

Swans has an important role to play in strengthening community, creating social value, and building environments where people can be the very best they can be. It’s a community-engaged club that improves people’s lives.

The Chair of the Swan Districts Foundation, Neville Bassett was on hand for launch.

“The Foundation will help the club deliver an increasing number of social impact programs throughout the Pilbara and metropolitan area, and also help program participants and past Swans players in need”, said Bassett.

“Sometimes life doesn’t go as planned and help is needed. We believe a club like Swans should be in a position to provide assistance – maybe just someone to talk to or financial help.”

The Swan Districts Foundation is a registered charity that can provide funds to the club’s social impact programs, and to past Swans players and social impact program participants who are disadvantaged or in necessitous circumstances through poverty, sickness, misfortune or helplessness as a result of social, health, economic, cultural, racial or physical disability.

The Foundation received generous donations at the Legends Luncheon from the Swan Districts Past Players and Officials Association, past Swans President Jim Watterston, Westar Capital, and past player Tony Cope who played 40 games for the club between 1985 and 1988.

The club also auctioned a 1980’s Premiership replica jumper with all the Premiership players names on it which was purchased by Jon Fogarty, who played in all three 1980’s Premierships, for a massive $10,000.

All Swans players played the game against West Perth in the replica jumpers and the number 28 jumper which was auctioned was to be worn by club champion Tony Notte. Unfortunately Tony was injured and couldn’t play after recently notching up his 279th game for the club, passing club great Stan Nowotny’s 278 games, to be second only behind club Immortal Bill Walker with 305 games.
