Friday, February 28, 2025 - 10:00 AM

Swan Districts Football Club is deeply saddened by the news of Keith Slaters passing. Slater played 167 games for Swan Districts and won the club’s fairest and best on three occasions in 1956, 1957 and 1960.

'We remember Keith Slater for much more than just his football exploits. Although his performances for Swans cannot be underestimated, Keith continued his amazing connection to Swans right up to his passing. Many young players honed their ruck skills under the tutelage of 'Spud' with many more finding work at the famous Slater and Gartrell Sports Store. Keith's generosity in both time and support was unwavering to the end.” President Peter Hodyl.

“He was a crucial cog in the wheel that brought us our first three flags and won the Simpson Medal in our maiden premiership win against great odds.

We will always reflect on what Keith has contributed to Swans and thank him and Val for their lifelong involvement in Swan Districts.”

“We had a great time together, it was a whirlwind in the 60s” Val Slater, Keith’s wife.

“We were a part of a great association at Swans and there were many happy memories with wonderful people”

While Keith was a legend on and off the footy field, he also made his mark in the cricket world. Keith was an all-rounder on the cricket pitch, playing Test cricket against England from 1958-1959, as well as playing for Western Australia between 1955 and 1968.

“Keith Slater was one of the most admired people that I have known, not only for his sporting achievements, but also his genuine concern for the success of others

“In my case he was a great influence on my development as a player and a person

“We spent a lot of time together discussing important matters when we both worked at

Sandovers in the city, Keith was the manager of the sports department, and I was in accounts

“I know that his passing has left a hole in the life of many people” says Robin McVee.

Keith was awarded Life Membership here at Swan Districts in 1973 and was inducted to Inaugural Hall of Fame in 2016

Outside of the club, Keith was appointed the honour of the Member of the Order of Australia in 2020 for his significant service to cricket, Aussie Rules Football, and baseball in Western Australia, as well as being inducted to the WA Football Hall of Fame in 2004.

Keith was a significant man to the Swan Districts Football Club and will be greatly missed by many.

Our deepest condolences are with Keith’s family, friends and teammates through this time.

Keith’s family has chosen a private cremation.
