Round 8 WAFL Women’s Match Report
Swan Districts maintained pace with the top two teams in the WAFL Women’s competition with a strong 14-point victory against South Fremantle on Sunday.
It was third against fourth in the WAFL Women’s competition at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Sunday afternoon with Swans arriving on a four-game winning streak.
Swan Districts started strongly with three goals to one in the opening term and then went on with the job from there to secure the 8.5 (53) to 6.3 (39) victory.
The win improves Swans to a 6-1 record this season to remain in third position but only sitting half a game behind both top two teams, Subiaco and Claremont.
Taylah Edwards played a starring role in attack for Swan Districts kicking four goals from her five kicks in the game with Emily McGuire also adding two goals.
Carys D’Addario continued her standout form in the midfield for Swans too by collecting 23 possessions and laying nine tackles.
Jaime Henry also picked up 19 touches (12 tackles), Naomi Baker 16 (13 tackles), Sienna Gerardi 16, Kayley King 14, Luka Davis 12 and Jemma Sly 11.
Swan Districts got off to a perfect start with a goal to Taylah Edwards inside the opening minute and then just a minute later Emily McGuire added another for the black-and-whites.
South Fremantle were able to respond thanks to Eva Flynn but then Edwards kicked her second and that saw Swans take a nine-point lead into the quarter-time break.
It then only took two minutes for Swan Districts to add another goal into the second quarter courtesy of Tamzyn Beros. South Fremantle did kick the only other goal of the half thanks to Zoe Huggett but it was Swans still leading by 10 points by the main break.
Bailey Hunt brought that deficit back to four points with the first goal of the second half for south Fremantle before Edwards kicked her third of the day to steady things for Swans.
McGuire added a second to push the lead out to 17 points but the Bulldogs then managed the last two of the third term thanks to Jess Watts and Huggett to set up a thrilling finish with Swans clinging to the five-point lead.
That became 11 with a fourth goal to Edwards to start the final term and then after Huggett kicked a third for South Fremantle, Swan Districts sealed the eventual 14-point win when Summer Ajduk kicked the last goal of the contest.
Earlier in the day on Sunday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval, Swan Districts took on South Fremantle in the Rogers Cup and couldn’t quite find that winning second goal with the two teams playing out a draw.
Swans did have 13 scoring shots to just eight from the Bulldogs for the game, but finished up with a scoreline of 1.12 against 2.6 with the two teams finishing up on 18 points in challenging conditions.
South Fremantle did kick the only goal of the first quarter to lead by nine points at quarter-time before Swan Districts managed just the four behinds in the second term.
It was another two behinds each in the third quarter before Swans did manage their lone goal of the game in the final term thanks to Khalia Fawcett.
Swan Districts also kicked another six behinds in the last quarter but South Fremantle added a second goal to secure the draw between the two teams.
As a result of the draw, Swan Districts remains in second position on the Rogers Cup ladder to be percentage ahead of South Fremantle with both teams now having four wins, two losses and a draw on the season.
