Round 8 Men’s Preview v West Coast

Swan Districts has never lost to the West Coast Eagles in the WAFL Men’s competition and will look to take that record to 11-0 in Saturday’s match up at Steel Blue Oval.

Swans will play host to the Eagles in Round 8 of the WAFL season on Saturday afternoon as part of the WA Day long weekend of football action looking for a second win of 2025, and to stay perfect dating back to 2019 against the Eagles.

The game will get underway at 2:30pm and as a result of the league clash against the Eagles, the Swan Districts colts and reserves will have the bye over the long weekend.

Both Swan Districts and West Coast come into Saturday’s game on the hunt of a second win of the season as well with each of them currently sitting on a 1-6 record to be just off bottom place thanks to percentage ahead of Subiaco.

Swan Districts’ win this season came prior to the State game break to the tune of 75 points when they hammered Subiaco under lights at Sullivan Logistics Stadium.

Meanwhile, West Coast’s win came against the league-leading South Fremantle by 16 points back in Round 5 at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

Saturday’s match up will be the 11th time that the two teams have met in the WAFL competition with Swan Districts having won each of those previous 10 encounters.

The first clash was back in 2019 when the Eagles first joined the WAFL with Swans winning both those matches by four and 14 points respectively.

The Eagles then dropped out of the league for the Covid season of 2020 but were back in 2021 with wins by 39 and two points for the black-and-whites.

There has been two matches in each of the past three years as well with Swan Districts winning all six of those including by 64 and 24 points in the two meetings of 2024.

That means Swans have won all 10 clashes by an average of 34 points with the closest being by just three in Round 15, 2023, and then the biggest margin being an 85-point victory in Round 17, 2022.

All 10 matches have been played at Steel Blue Oval as will this Saturday’s contest.

Following Swans beating Subiaco back in Round 6 prior to the State game, they struggled last Saturday kicking just four goals in an eventual 42-point defeat at the hands of Claremont also at Steel Blue Oval.

Now ahead of returning home this Saturday to host the Eagles, Swans have added Luke Cotellessa, Brandon Erceg, Brodyn Fitzgerald, Ethyn Kane, Leigh Kohlmann and Brad Lynch to the squad.

Ayden Cartwright goes out of the Swan Districts team through suspension with Lewis Tester the other out following that loss to the Tigers.

West Coast lost to West Perth by 57 points last Saturday evening at Joondalup and from that team, Josh Burke, Campbell Chesser, Clay Hall, Orien Kerr, Connor Klemke, Darby McCarthy, Denholm Melrose, Andries Mercer and Ethan Sambo have all been added to the squad.

Going out for the Eagles are Hamish Davis, Archer Reid, Jack Williams, Jobe Shanahan and Bo Allan
