Round 7 Men’s Match Report v Claremont

Swan Districts battled hard in the first sign of wet conditions this WAFL Men’s season but in the end Claremont came away with the 42-point victory at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday.

Swan Districts were back home at Steel Blue Oval looking to build on the win against Subiaco from two weeks earlier before the State game break.

To add to the occasion, it was a day of celebration for the 2010 premiership team that also beat Claremont in the grand final, but on this occasion the Tigers would prove too strong beating Swan Districts 11.10 (76) to 4.10 (34).

Swans goals for the day were kicked by Max Chipper, Luke Kelly, Ayden Cartwright and Jesse Turner.

Jye Chalcraft racked up another 28 possessions for Swan Districts with Cartwright picking up 23 disposals, Jehb O’Donohue 20, Turner 20, Aidan Clarke 14, Seb Bright 14, Lewis Tester 14 and Brenton Hilton 14 while Troy Yukich had 37 hit outs in the ruck.

Swan Districts were looking to build on their win from two weeks ago before the State game break and made a strong start in front of the 2010 premiership heroes with the first goal of the game thanks to Max Chipper.

Claremont did kick the only other two goals of the first quarter to be leading by seven points at quarter-time.

Swans captain Jesse Turner did manage a goal in the second term as well but Claremont kicked another four to open up a 24-point advantage by half-time.

Swan Districts did kick two goals in the third term thanks to Ayden Cartwright and Luke Kelly, but the Tigers added another three to extend their advantage to 30 points at three quarter-time.

Swans could only score four behinds in the final term with Claremont kicking the only two goals to extend the final winning margin to 42 points.

The day’s action got underway on Saturday morning at Steel Blue Oval with the colts match up and it was Swan Districts scoring the thrilling 8.5 (53) to 7.9 (51) victory.

Claremont had opened up a 22-point lead by half-time thanks to three goals to one behind in the second quarter with the Tigers still on top by 22 points at three quarter-time.

It was still a 15-point lead to Claremont by the 10-minute mark of the last term as well, but Swans then kicked the last three goals of the game including one just before the siren thanks to Jai Debono to secure the heart stopping two-point victory.

Not only did Debono kick the game winning goal, but he kicked three for the match from his 17 possessions with Lorenze Cole also kicking two majors.

Soren Feast racked up 25 possessions for Swan Districts, Ezekiel Hewett 18, Jamie Sidebottom 17, Liam Hrabar 16, William Glasson 16 and Jaxon Ozanne 15.

The reserves were up next and that also ended up with a thrilling 6.8 (44) to 5.7 (37) victory for Swan Districts against Claremont at Steel Blue Oval.

Swans kicked two goals to one in the first quarter to be leading by six points at quarter-time, but the Tigers turned the tide in the second term and scores were all square going into half-time.

It was then two goals apiece in the third term but Swan Districts managed to kick the only goal of the final term thanks to Evan Smith to secure the seven-point win and to improve to a 6-1 record to retain top position.

Smith finished up kicking two goals in the win for Swans as did Tom Cathcart.

Luke Cotellessa racked up 30 possessions while laying 10 tackles and Chayse Martinson finished with 26 disposals, Ethyn Kane 24, Chase Loftus 20, Brad Lynch 18, Brandon Erceg 18, Brodyn Fitzgerald 17 and Max York 17.

Tom Smith delivered a strong showing in the ruck too made up of 18 touches and 36 hit outs.
