Round 18 WAFL Women’s Match Report v East Fremantle
Swan Districts finished the WAFL Women’s home and away season as the hottest team in the competition by beating East Fremantle by four points at Steel Blue Oval on Sunday.
Swans came into the game guaranteed of finishing in third position no matter the result but on a four-match winning run and wanting to keep that momentum going heading into the finals.
Swan Districts ended up kicking the only two goals of the first half which was enough to set up the eventual 2.3 (15) to 1.5 (11) victory at Steel Blue Oval in tough conditions on Sunday afternoon.
The result leaves Swans finishing in third position with a 12-4 record to set up a first semi-final also at Steel Blue Oval and also against East Fremantle this coming Sunday afternoon.
The only two scores of the first quarter were behinds for East Fremantle but Swan Districts were going to the scoring end in the second term and were able to make the most of it.
The Swans kicked the first goal of the game thanks to Kayley King at the seven-minute mark before Emily McGuire added another just before half-time with the black-and-whites leading by 12 points going into the main break.
East Fremantle had the breeze behind them in the third quarter and did manage their only goal of the game thanks to Siena Jezierski-Brown and in the process cut the Swan Districts lead to four points by three quarter-time.
Then in the last term, it was a behind apiece with Swans holding on for the four-point victory to close the home and away season.
It was the Rogers Cup contest that got proceedings underway on Sunday afternoon at Steel Blue Oval with Swan Districts ending up winning 2.8 (20) to 1.2 (8) against East Fremantle.
The Swans dominated the opening quarter with the only six scoring shots and even though only one of those were a goal, they were still leading by 11 points at quarter-time.
Neither team managed to score in a wet second quarter which meant Swan Districts were still leading by that 11 points by half-time.
There was only one behind scored between both teams in the third quarter and that went the way of East Fremantle but the Swans were still on top by 10 points at three quarter-time.
The wet weather then cleared up in the final term and both teams were able to take advantage kicking a goal apiece which ended up seeing Swan Districts securing the 12-point victory to close the home and away season.
The result means that Swans finish the Rogers Cup season in second position with 12 wins, three losses and a draw to set up a second semi-final match up against West Perth with the winner to be the first team through to the 2025 grand final.
The goals for Swan Districts were kicked by Leah Howard and Madison Fisher with Grace Vale, Shanae Morisey, Sienna Pollard, Addison Hall and Brianna North among the other strong performers.
