Round 17 Men’s Match Report v Subiaco
Swan Districts dug deep in challenging conditions at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday afternoon to beat Subiaco for the second time in 2025 with the 18-point victory.
Swans returned to action on Saturday afternoon at Steel Blue Oval following the Round 16 bye ahead of hosting a Subiaco team that they impressively beat by 75 points back in Round 6 at Leederville’s Sullivan Logistics Stadium.
Swan Districts kicked three goals to one in the first half and then the only goal of the last term on the way to the 6.7 (43) to 3.7 (25) victory to improve to a 5-10 record on the season with three matches remaining.
Jehb O’Donohue and Brad Lynch kicked two goals apiece in the win for the Swans with O’Donohue also laying nine tackles.
Jye Chalcraft also finished with 29 possessions for Swan Districts, Max Chipper 23, Bryce Watson 21, Jesse Turner 20, Josh Cipro 18, Tom Smith 17 and Lewis Tester 17 while Nathan Blakely had 22 touches, 30 hit outs and seven tackles in the ruck.
Subiaco did kick the game’s first goal after just a minute courtesy of Jack Mayo but Swan Districts responded with the last three goals of the opening term thanks to Jehb O’Donohue with the first two and then another to Brad Lynch.
That saw the Swans leading by 14 points at quarter-time before neither team managed a goal in tough conditions in the second term and after a behind apiece, the black-and-whites were still leading by 14 points at half-time.
The conditions cleared up in the third quarter and both teams kicked two goals apiece with the two from Swans coming from Leigh Kohlmann and Lynch which ensured they remained leading by 11 points at three quarter-time.
Swan Districts then kicked the only goal of the last quarter through Tom Smith and that helped to secure the eventual 18-point victory.
The day’s action on Saturday morning started with the colts match up which ended up being a thriller where Swan Districts prevailed 5.2 (32) to 3.11 (29) against Subiaco at Steel Blue Oval.
Swans kicked the only goal in the first quarter to the four behinds from the Lions before Subiaco then kicked 2.4 to no score from the home team in the second term to go into half-time leading by 14 points.
It was then one goal apiece in the third quarter with Subiaco still leading by 15 points at three quarter-time, but it was Swan Districts dominating the last term with three goals and holding the Lions to one behind to snatch the three-point victory.
As a result of the thrilling win, Swan Districts remain solid in fourth position on the colts ladder to be only percentage behind the third placed West Perth and a game clear of the fifth tanked Claremont with just three rounds and two games to play.
The goals for the Swans were kicked by Liam Hrabar, Cooper Rullo, Cooper Shord, Harley Cummings and Cooper Dudfield.
Blake Kelly racked up 29 possessions, Soren Feast 29, Rullo 22, Jamie Sidebottom 20, Levi Calcott 19, Max Bain 17 and Cummings 15.
The reserves match up was up next at Steel Blue Oval with Swan Districts starting well but only managing one goal after quarter-time with Subiaco ending up winning 6.4 (40) to 3.7 (25).
The Swans did start well with two goals to one in the first quarter to be leading by eight points at the opening break, but then the Lions kicked the only two goals of the second term to be on top by two points at half-time.
Swan Districts did manage the only goal of the third quarter to be leading by three points at three quarter-time, but Subiaco then managed the only three goals of the fourth term on the way to the eventual 15-point victory.
The result leaves Swan Districts in fourth position on the reserves ladder with an 8-6 record to still be two games clear of the fifth ranked East Perth and just percentage behind the third ranked Perth.
Luke Kelly was brilliant for Swans with 30 possessions 17 tackles and a goal with Ben Hewett also providing 21 touches, 11 tackles and a goal with the other major kicked by Cruz Woodley.
Luke Cotellessa also had 24 disposals for the black-and-whites, Jacob Coniglio 20, Chayse Martinson 20, Max York 18, Ned Reiger 17 and Lucas Andrews 17.
