Pruey’s Match Review: Round 7
Saturday’s clash against Claremont was always going to be a significant test for our young group, and while the 4.10 (34) to 11.10 (76) result is disappointing, Its presented several learning opportunities for our developing side.
We started the game with real intent and matched Claremont’s intensity around the contest. Max Chipper’s early goal, pushing forward from the wing, set the tone for us. Both teams found it hard to convert chances, but I was pleased with our defensive pressure and the way we stuck to our structures in the first quarter.
Second Quarter: The Turning Point
The second quarter was where the game slipped away from us. Claremont’s experienced midfield, featuring three Sandover Medalists and the state’s premier ruckman, really got on top. We struggled to control their spread and ball movement, and they punished us on the scoreboard with four goals for the term. Our inability to wrest back momentum in this period ultimately proved costly.
Despite the scoreboard, I saw plenty to like from our young midfield group. Otis Harvey, Aiden Cartwright, Max Chipper, and Luke Kelly all faced a huge challenge against such quality opposition, and I know they’ll take a lot from the experience. With 10 players in our side aged 23 or under, these are the games that will accelerate their development.
Jye Chalcraft was a real shining light through the midfield, showing composure and work rate. Aiden Cartwright played his best game at league level, which was fantastic to see, although it was disappointing for him and the team that his day ended with a report and a two-match suspension.
Defensive Highlights
I want to acknowledge Luke Taylor’s effort in defence. He took on the job of shutting down Claremont’s key forward, Gowdie, and kept him goalless, which is no small feat.
While we’re not satisfied with the result, I’m confident that the lessons learned from this match will hold our group in good stead. We’ll review the second quarter closely and continue to work on our ability to respond when challenged. The character and attitude of our young players gives me great optimism for the future.
We’ll regroup, focus on our next challenge being West Coast, and continue to grow together as a team.
