Preliminary Final Women’s Preview v Subiaco
Swan Districts do remain the hottest team at the business end of the WAFL Women’s season and they have a chance to earn a spot in the grand final playing Subiaco in the preliminary final on Sunday.
Swan Districts will take on Subiaco in the WAFL Women’s preliminary final for 2025 on Sunday afternoon at Leederville’s Sullivan Logistics Stadium with the game getting underway at 12:30pm.
The winner of the preliminary final will move into the following Sunday’s grand final against Claremont which will be held at Lathlain’s Mineral Resources Park.
Swan Districts finished the home and away season having won their last five matches to lock away third position and earn the right to host East Fremantle in last Sunday’s first semi-final.
The Swans went on to score the one-point victory to advance to the preliminary final while Subiaco lost an extra time thriller also last Sunday against Claremont by just the one point.
With both teams coming off one-point thrillers to open the finals series, all signs point to another terrific contest on Sunday afternoon at Leederville with a spot in the grand final up for grabs.
The two teams met twice throughout the home and away season with the first clash back in Round 3 at Steel Blue Oval where Subiaco prevailed by 24 points.
The return encounter was at Sullivan Logistics Stadium in Round 10 which also saw the Lions beat the Swans by 21 points.
The last time the two teams met in a WAFL Women’s finals encounter was also in the preliminary final of 2022 which saw Swan Districts defeat Subiaco by 38 points on the way to the grand final where it was Peel Thunder who claimed the premiership.
The only players remaining from the Swan Districts that team who could be out there again this Sunday are Emily McGuire, Jaime Henry, Eliza Gelmi, Bella Edgley and Taylah Edwards.
Swan Districts coach Jason Burton couldn’t be happier with the form his team is in at the business end of the season but is fully aware of what a challenge it will be to overcome Subiaco to reach the grand final.
“The initial message straight after the game was to enjoy that win and embrace that feeling with each other and family and friends,” Burton told WA Football.
“But we turn up again this week to train and plan for a very tough challenge against a very good team who have great experience as well as young stars.
“We haven’t beaten Subiaco this season so it’s a challenge we want to take head on, and we must believe in what we are capable of.
“We’ve seen this year that the top six or seven teams are all capable of beating anyone, it’s who can execute it best on the day, so we are all in.”
The Swan Districts Rogers Cup team will also play in a preliminary final on Sunday when they take on Claremont also at Sullivan Logistics Stadium with the game getting underway at 10:20am.
Swan Districts finished the Rogers Cup season in second position before a loss in the second semi-final last week to West Perth but they get another chance to reach the grand final by taking on the Tigers this Sunday morning.
Claremont finished the season in fourth position with a 9-7 record but then defeated East Fremantle by 11 points in the first semi-final last week to book in a spot in the preliminary final.
The two teams met twice during the season with Swan Districts winning by 12 points back in Round 9 at Steel Blue Oval and backing that up with a 33-point victory at Revo Fitness Stadium in Round 13.
The winner will advance to the grand final against West Perth next Sunday at Mineral Resources Park.
