Grand Final WAFL Women’s Match Report
Swan Districts stormed into the WAFL Women’s grand final in hot form and then went heartbreakingly close of what would have been a stunning premiership with Claremont holding on for the one-point win.
The WAFL Women’s grand final for 2025 took place on Sunday afternoon at Lathlain’s Mineral Resources Park with Claremont playing in a decider for the fourth straight year, and looking for a third premiership in that time.
It was a first grand final appearance for Swan Districts since 2021 and they had arrived in hot form having won their past seven matches including beating East Fremantle and Subiaco to open the finals series.
Swan Districts were then playing catch up throughout the grand final but did kick the only goal of the last quarter to make it a one-point game, but Claremont held on in a frantic finish.
The Tigers prevailed 3.6 (24) to 3.5 (23) to win back-to-back premierships, and a third in four years, but it was a remarkably brave effort from the Swans to make it and then to get within a point.
It completed the most thrilling imaginable WAFL Women’s finals series with Claremont and Swan Districts both winning their semi finals by a solitary point, and then Swans won by just two points in the preliminary final against Subiaco.
All three goals in the grand final for Swan Districts were kicked by Summer Yarran to go with her 11 possessions and four marks.
Carys D’Addario produced another brilliant performance in the midfield for the Swans finishing with 25 possessions, nine tackles and six entries inside the forward 50.
Jaime Henry has also emerged as an elite midfielder in the competition this season and delivered 22 disposals, 22 tackles, three marks and three inside-50 entries in the grand final.
Kayley King also had 13 possessions for Swan Districts, Tamzyn Beros 11, Summer Ajduk 11 (14 tackles), Adi Griffith 10, Naomi Baker 10, Emma Humphries 10 and Lauren Quaife 10 to go with 38 hit outs and five tackles in the ruck.
It took 11 minutes for the first score of the grand final but that went the way of Swan Districts. In fact, the first two scores were behinds from Swans forward Emily McGuire before Claremont kicked the opening goal of the grand final courtesy of Rachel Ortlepp.
That would be the only goal of the first quarter with the Tigers leading by four points at quarter-time before stretching that lead to 10 points with a goal to Sarah Viney to open the second term.
Swan Districts then got on the board with their first goal of the grand final at the 15-minute mark when Summer Yarran kicked truly and by half-time that had cut the Claremont lead back to just seven points.
Yarran then kicked another goal 10 minutes into the third quarter and all of a sudden the margin was back to just one point shortly after when she kicked a behind.
Claremont did kick a goal just before three quarter-time to be back out to a seven-point lead before Yarran kicked her third goal of the grand final five minutes into the fourth quarter.
That brought it back to a one-point margin and that’s where the score would stay in a frantic final 15 minutes with the premiership at stake and ultimately Claremont holding on for the back-to-back flags.
