Round 5 WAFL Preview v East Fremantle
There's plenty of reasons for Swan Districts to be excited about Sunday's home clash with East Fremantle at Steel Blue Oval.
To start with it's the only WAFL game being played on the day so all eyes will be on Steel Blue Oval when the game gets underway at 2.30pm.
It's also Anzac Round in the WAFL so it's a special occasion to play to commemorate that occasion with a home game at Bassendean always giving that extra significance.
Then there's also the chance for Swan Districts to continue the rough start to the premiership defence of East Fremantle and to also snap a two-game losing slide and to potentially return to a top-five position.
To top all of that off and Swan Districts will be celebrating the 90-year anniversary of the club's first ever game which also took place back on April 28, 1934, and also happened to be against East Fremantle.
To celebrate the occasion, Swans will be wearing specially designed jumpers to look just like the ones worn back in 1934 that will also have featured on it every single player to run out for at least one league appearance with the black-and-whites over the past 90 years.
Swan Districts co-captain Brandon Erceg talked about the occasion and how excited he is to be part of celebrating history on Sunday.
"This weekend marks a very special occasion as we'll be playing on the same date against the same opposition 90 years ago," Erceg said.
"To help celebrate this occasion we'll be wearing replica guernseys which are the original design from that very first team.
"Each guernsey is going to have every player who has played a league game with their name on it. So come down to celebrate a historic occasion for the football club and I look forward to seeing everyone there."
Swan Districts come into the game looking to bounce back from losing the past two games against Perth and East Perth since a first up win over the West Coast Eagles.
Swans take on an East Fremantle team on Sunday who won last year's premiership, but so far have also just the one win on the board in 2024.
The Sharks started their season losing to Peel Thunder before a 90-point win against Claremont and then a win two weeks ago to the Eagles, becoming the first team to lose in the WAFL to West Coast in almost two years.
Swans are also looking to turn around recently history on Sunday having lost the past five games against East Fremantle, including both matches last year by a combined 28 points.
Last time Swan Districts beat the Sharks was at Steel Blue Oval back in Round 8, 2021, and they will be looking to repeat the dose on the special occasion this Sunday afternoon.
The day's action on Sunday morning at 8.45am will begin with the colts contest between Swan Districts and East Fremantle.
Swans come into Round 5 sitting in third position on the colts ladder having won both their matches so far and looking to back up a thrilling two-point win against Perth a fortnight ago.
Meanwhile, Swan Districts reserves are still hunting their first win after claiming last year's premiership by taking on East Fremantle this Sunday with the game to begin at 11.15am.
